Historians and mathematicians

Within our history leaning this week, the children of Lions class have been researching the Victorian era. The children utilised a range of resources, including fact cards, QR codes linking to websites, news paper articles and diary entries, to find information about what life was like for the Victorians. The children worked in pairs and shared their findings on our working wall.

We also talked about the reason this period of history was called the Victorian age. We learnt about the life of Queen Victoria during her reign and added key dates to our class timeline. The children also enjoyed completing an interactive quiz using the information they had identified in their research.

As mathematicians the children have been looking at creating equal groups and using repeated addition number sentences to help us calculate how many items we have altogether. The children have worked fantastically with their learning partners to identify solutions to their problem solving activities this week. They were especially resilient when we moved on to creating arrays with equal rows and columns.

An interesting find!

As part of our science learning this week, Lions class became season detectives. We went for a walk around our village looking for signs of winter. Before our walk we spent time considering what we already knew about the seasons and made predictions as to what we may see on our walk. While we were on our walk the children noted how bare the trees were, that we couldn't see any baby animals on the farm and how we couldn't hear many birds as they had flown to somewhere hotter.

We also made a very exciting discovery while we were out on our walk. As we were walking through the wooded area behind the church, we uncovered a skull buried in the leaves! The children were so excited  and commented that we were like Mary Anning finding dinosaur fossils. We took the skull back to class with us to investigate further what animal it may have belonged to. The children made reasoned predictions as to which animal we thought it was the skull of. We then spent time researching and identifying various skulls to see if any of them matched the one that we had found. After an afternoon of scientific investigation we were able to discover that it was the skull of a Muntjac.

Our first week back

The children of Lions class have all enjoyed a fabulous first week back following their Christmas holidays.

Our theme for this term is 'Up, up and away to a time long ago' with our focus being around dinosaurs. In our maths learning we have created 'shape-a-sauruses' using a variety of 2D shapes. We also worked with our friends to order the values on our dinosaur fact cards from shortest to tallest, heaviest to lightest and smallest to biggest.

In our English we have started to learn about Mary Anning and her fabulous dinosaur discoveries. We were able to link this to our PSHE leaning and think about how fair things may have been for Mary during her lifetime.

In our PE we have been thinking about how to move like different dinosaurs and used various pieces of music to inspire us. Within our music we have used percussion instruments to create sounds that represent a stegosaurus moving around.

Fun in the sun

This week we took full advantage of the seasonal weather during our PE session. We played games involving water, including 'Over and und...
