Fun in the sun

This week we took full advantage of the seasonal weather during our PE session. We played games involving water, including 'Over and under' and 'Drip, drip, drench'. The children had a fabulous time working as a team and cheering on their friends! The children concluded their afternoon with a water fight. As you will see from our photos, the children certainly had lots of fun!

When the circus came to town!

This week the children of Lions Class were fortunate to receive some circus training. The kind people from Circus Ferrel have been teaching all of the children across our Swallowtail federation a variety of  circus skills. It was our turn this morning! The children walked the tightrope, spun plates, juggled with scarves, tried their hand at poi spinning and also practised with the diablos.

I was so proud of the children's engagement and enthusiasm for all of the activities. They demonstrated true resilience when trying to perfect their skills.

We are mathematicians!

In our maths learning this week Lions Class have been identifying units of measure for time. The children have been estimating, measuring and recording the length of time that particular activities take. They have identified which is the most suitable unit of measure to use and have also worked on comparing and ordering the times that they have recorded.

Poor Mrs Gilbert's tough tray clock was all in a muddle! The children were able to apply their learning of telling the time from the previous week to help put it back in order. The children then went on to enjoy testing their friends on their knowledge of telling the time to the hour and half hour.

We are geographers

Within our geography learning this week the children of Lions' Class have been looking at compass direction. We took our learning outside and, armed with directions and compasses, the children were able to navigate a walk around the village, recording landmarks that we saw along the way.

Africa Alive

The children of Lions Class have enjoyed a fabulous day out at Africa Alive this week! Despite the very changeable weather, which really was a case of four seasons in one day, our spirits were not dampened!

The children took an interest in all of the animals that they saw and we were able to use our knowledge of continents to discuss where in the world they originated from. The children were particularly fascinated by the meerkats and the lemurs.

We also enjoyed a talk on giraffes and discovered lots of interesting facts, including why they have black tongues. You'll have to ask one of our Lions if you want to know the answer to that fun fact!

We ended our day with a train ride around the zoo and got to see our friends from Sutton, who had spent the day there too.

More outdoor learning!

Once again the children of Lions Class have taken full advantage of the beautiful weather! Within their outdoor learning the children have been painting with water and using chalks to practice their tricky word writing on the playground.

The children were also given shape riddles to solve and then went on a scavenger hunt, around the school grounds, to find the respective 2D and 3D shapes. The children also enjoyed hiding the shapes for their friends and developed their own shape treasure hunt.

The children consolidated their knowledge of number and place value with a carousel of activities and games. The children worked with their learning partners to order numbers from greatest to least, solved doubling number problems and also ordered even numbers from 0 to 50.
